Oral Surgery: Frequently Asked Questions

What is Oral Surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a dental specialty that deals with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, injuries and defects of the mouth, jaws, face, and related structures. This includes the removal of impacted and decayed teeth, placement of dental implants, biopsy, removal of cysts and tumors of the mouth and jaws, treatment of facial trauma, and reconstructive jaw surgery.

What does maxillofacial mean?

Maxillofacial refers to the face and jaws, which, along with the mouth, comprise the areas of expertise of an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the four teeth farthest back in the mouth -- one on each side of the upper and lower jaw. Not everyone has wisdom teeth.

Who needs their wisdom teeth extracted?

Anyone who is in danger of developing impacted wisdom teeth (third molars that partially erupt or are stuck underneath the gums). An impacted third molar should be removed to prevent any more complications that could arise in the future.

Can I undergo extraction if the gum underlying my tooth is swollen?

No, you need to be pre-medicated first for about a week prior to extraction both to minimize the spread of the infection and because the local anesthetic solution will not take effect if there is an abscess underlying it.

Do Oral surgeon treat TMJ disorders?

Yes, Oral Surgeons treat Temporo Mandibular Joint (TMJ) problems.
